There will always be reasons we can come up with for why it’s too late.

“I missed my chance. I’m too old. I’m too tired. I don’t have the time anymore. I’m not good enough, smart enough, creative enough.”

But as long as you feel that ache, that pull, it’s not too late. That stirring inside you is evidence that this thing in you is not dead, otherwise, you wouldn’t feel it.

But there’s a voice inside making a seemingly good argument against this. The voice says, “See? See how you messed up? See how you failed? See how you didn’t take action?” A great way to combat this voice is not by getting sucked into a debate, but building evidence for the truth.

The best kind of evidence to start building momentum is external evidence because it’s harder to argue. If the voice inside says, “You’re unhealthy and you’ll never be fit,” but you can respond with, “Actually, I’m someone who works on my fitness. I went to the gym today.” If the voice says, “You’ll never be a writer,” you can respond with, “Actually, I write a blog every day.”

Building identity based habits (ref: Atomic Habits) and finishing projects you’re excited about are great ways to practically take action towards building evidence that it’s not too late. Before you know it, you’ll realize you’re not even thinking about whether or not it’s too late to do something, because you’ll be doing it.

HI THERE.

I’m Shel Kim Rollison, a writer, singer-songwriter, and coach. I release music as Our Daughter. Welcome to my daily blog!

Austin Kleon once wrote, “If it’s not online, it doesn’t exist.” After decades of writing offline, having my thoughts and insights “not exist”, I was inspired by Seth Godin to decide once to commit to a daily blog, and here we are.

I write about my reflections, insights, and life learnings, including those around self-awareness, growth, creativity, and how to live a life true to ourselves.

However you came to be here, I hope you find something that’s helpful.
